After a night in boats

At dawn, on December 27, the people from Dhiffushi island in Male' Atoll were being brought to Male'. The tsunami had struck hard on Dhiffushi. They were brought in a Coast Guard vessel and boats from Dhiffushi. The injured were taken in ambulances to hospital. The rest were taken to Majeediyaa School where a relief camp was subsequently set up.

One young man who arrived in a wooden boat (dhoni) said they had been in the boat since 6.00 pm on December 26. The women and children with elderly had stayed in the crowded boat throughout the night, with uncertainty and fear of more waves. The young man said two more boats were on their way to Male'. The island of Dhiffushi had been evacuated and the people were heading for what they hoped was safety.
