Disaster Unseen

By noon we were walking through the streets of Male', observing the damage caused by the tsunami. As Male' had experienced a tidal wave in 1987, we believed this was a similar one, even though we knew this one was triggered by the earthquake we felt in the morning. There were no deaths, no injuries and no large scale damage to houses and buildings in Male'. Little did we realize that the rest of the country was suffering while we were walking around Male'. We did not know that men and women were running around, wailing and screaming, swimming frantically for their survival in several other islands of the country. We were not aware that women were clutching to their babies and parents were holding on to their children in desperation, as the forces of the tsunami created havoc across the country.
