guardian of the city

The tetrapods were put around Male' to protect the city from tidal waves, after the waves flooded parts of Male' in 1987. They were meant to safeguard the city from rising sea level associated with global warming. The tsunami that hit the city on 26 December was totally unexpected and this photo shows the tetrapods, donated by Japan, seperating the flooded streets and the sea which swelled.
